Muscle Power

Transport that uses muscle power can be a cheap way of traveling - and fun too.

In China there are few cars. Most people get about on bicycles. There are so many bikes that special traffic police are needed to direct them on their way.

Human power can move other people along too. Cycle-rickshaws are popular in India and Asia. Comfortable seats at the back can hold two people, while the strong-legged cyclist pulls them along behind him.

In some countries, horses and donkeys do the pulling. In Sicily and Portugal you can take a trip in a colorful horse-drawn “taxi”. But in Canada, the Inuit people get dogs to do the work, pulling sledges across the snow. The biggest work animal of all is the elephant. In Thailand these huge beasts do the work of many men, picking up heavy loads with their trunks.
