1.
Man: When are you flying to Florida tomorrow?
Woman: I need to take off for the airport around 1 to arrive there in time.
Narrator: What does the woman mean?

2.
Man: I’m starving, but there’s nothing to eat in the house. We haven’t done any shopping for a week.
Woman: Well, then I’m going to go to the supermarket.
Man: It’s nearly 10 already. It’s probably already closed.
Narrator: What is the man implying?

3.
Man: I need to get an extension from Dr. Sanders. I didn’t get my paper finished that was due today.
Woman: What happened to it?
Man: I was up late finishing off my paper, when there was a power failure in the dorm. My whole paper got erased before I had a chance to print it. I did my best — I just need a little more time.
Woman: Dr. Sanders said late papers were not acceptable.
Narrator: What does the woman mean?

4.
Woman: I can’t believe Professor Leonard just sprang a surprise test on us.
Man: I knew there was going to be a test — I have a sort of sixth sense for these things.
Narrator: What does the man mean?

5.
Man: Tim and I got into a fight last night. He didn’t do his share of a project we’re working on yet again. So I got pretty mad.
Woman: I hope you weren’t too mean on him. He’s rather sensitive.
Man: I just pointed out that he never pulls his own weight.
Narrator: What does the man mean?

6.
Man: Did you see that tie Professor Harrington was wearing today?
Woman: Yeah, but his wife bought it for him, so I told him it looked nice.
Man: Nice? It’s really ugly. You shouldn’t have lied to him.
Woman: It was just a white lie.
Narrator: What does the woman mean?

7.
Man: Kerry was supposed to meet me 20 minutes ago to give me her biology notes, but she hasn’t shown up yet.
Woman: I’d like to give her a taste of her own medicine for a change.
Narrator: What does the man mean?

8.
Woman: Can you tell me when my car will be ready?
Man: Well, it only takes a couple hours to align the wheels, but your transmission needs to be replaced, and that’s a good two-day job.
Narrator: What does the woman want to know?

9.
Woman: Boy, classes sure are different here as they get more advanced.
Man: That’s right. And they get more intersting. In upper division classes, you can actually interact with your professor, instead of just listening to long lectures all semester.
Woman: Yeah, especially in the seminar courses. I like how in the upper levels, there are more seminars and fewer lecture courses.
Man: As a matter of fact, I have 3 seminars this semester alone.
Narrator: What does the man mean?
